3 Human-Centered Post Shut Down Marketing Tips

Business Open Sign

After my first few years of working in the field of marketing, I realized something special about my profession: all good business communication goes back to being a good human. The best in the game of customer acquisition and retention may not be the biggest or the flashiest, but do you know what makes them a cut above the rest?

It’s their genuine compassion and care for others, in this case their customers, that causes them to stand out among the sometimes self-centered noise that brands like to make.

Consumers can see through the fluff, and a lot of times, the brands with the most substance win. “Put yourself in others’ shoes,” “treat others the way you want to be treated,” and “listen before responding,” are all good life skills, but they’re also good business marketing skills.

Find out what you truly stand for, and communicate it correctly.

To practice what we preach, let’s be honest. 2020 has been a lot. We started out with the loss of an iconic sports legend, got a few weeks of normalcy, then were randomly thrust into a global health crisis, came to grips with centuries of systematic inequality and are now wading through the uncharted waters of a new economic turndown.

What a year! In addition to the fact that we are half-way through, the good news is, you have what it takes to make someone smile, to ease the load and partially take the stress of the twin-digit year away with your products or services.

Here’s how!

1. Address the Concerns

People will almost certainly tune out anything that appears to be irrelevant to what is happening in their society, especially in a year like 2020. Your customers want to know that you are aware of what’s happening and are doing what you can to solve the problem as it relates to what you offer.

Go ahead. Tell them. Explain in your marketing communications that you are aware and carefully list what you’re doing about it. Otherwise, they may think you’re doing nothing.

2. Read the Room (Special Promotions)

To date, over 12% of Americans are out of work. Special, discounted promotions are a great strategy that not only brings your business back top-of-mind for current customers, but turns the heads of new customers.

Now is a great time to run a promotion threaded with your unique brand personality. Don’t know your brand personality? Find out here.

3. Walk Your Talk

After marketing has done its job, it’s all on the product. Just like in real life, people expect you to be who you say you are. Secure the equity of your brand by delivering on your brand promise.

Wishing you, your customers and everyone you love a safe, peaceful and productive second half of 2020!
